About Kendo

About Us

The Capital Area Budokai is 501c3 Non-Profit Organization dedicated to the proliferation of Japanese Budo – Martial Ways – and available for demonstrations at Japanese cultural events. We are lifetime students of the arts that we teach and practice. We offer classes in: Kendo, Atarashii Naginata, Kyudo, Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo, Nakamura Ryu Battodo, Toyama Ryu Iaido, and Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo.

The Budokai is an association of several local organizations that are in direct contact with their roots in Japan:

  • Northern Virginia Kendokai
  • Northern Virginia Tendokan
  • Northern Virginia Kyudokai
  • Virginia Kenskonkai
  • Capital Area Jodokai
  • Northern Virginia Mugaikai

As part of the Budokai, Northern Virginia Kendokai practices Kendo as a form of physical, philosophical and psychological training which both strengthens and ennobles its students.

We are members of the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF) through the Southeastern US Kendo Federation (SEUSKF) and hold a close partnership with other Kendo Dojos across the region.

Kendo is the Japanese form of fencing. It arises from the sword arts of ancient Japan and is the modern incarnation of a centuries-long evolution.
Kendo is more than just learning to fence with a sword. It is about discipline and honing proper spirit.
